So, if the Width of the render area is smaller than the Height (like 720x1280, or any other portrait orientation) then parts of the scene that are off-screen are rendered. I don't know if that's intended.

The width of the real-time 3D view does not affect the results of the [Rendering] function. The rendered area is calculated so that the shorter horizontal or vertical width is equal to the camera's viewing angle, which can be set in the [View Panel]. Therefore, a vertical image may be rendered beyond the top and bottom edges of the 3D view.
